Has back pain kept you home from work? You are not alone.

According to the American Chiropractic Association, back pain is one of the most common reasons people miss work. It is also one of the most common reasons people visit a doctor.

Back pain has more than one cause. Here are three common ones.

A back injury

People can hurt their backs by lifting heavy objects, overexerting themselves or moving the wrong way. These moves can strain or sprain the muscles and ligaments in the back.

Pain from a recent injury is called acute pain. It comes on suddenly, and it often eases as the injury settles. Over-the-counter medication can help manage this pain. Ask your medical doctor or pharmacist which option is right for you.

Some people also use chiropractic care for acute back pain. Spinal adjustments and hands-on care may help some people feel more comfortable while an injury settles.

A medical condition

Several conditions can cause back pain. These include fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, inflammatory joint diseases and scoliosis. Pain from these conditions can last a long time, and this long-lasting pain is called chronic pain.

Chronic pain is different from acute pain. Some people with chronic back pain choose to explore chiropractic care. They often do so alongside care from their medical doctor.

Care for a chronic condition may take longer to show results, and results vary. Dr. Rosseland talks with you about what to expect. He also tells you when other providers should be involved.

Everyday habits that affect back pain

Everyday choices can affect your health. Extra body weight, too little exercise and smoking can all play a part in back pain.

  • Extra weight puts more stress on the back. Over time, that stress can contribute to pain.
  • Smoking has many negative effects. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) notes that smoking can reduce the flow of nutrients to the discs in the spine. People who smoke may also heal more slowly.
  • Exercise builds strength in muscles and tendons. A sedentary lifestyle can leave the body weaker and more prone to back pain and other health problems.

Staying active with chiropractic care

Chiropractic care may help ease back pain for some patients. When you feel better, it can be easier to stay active.

Exercise that includes strength training can support your overall health in a number of ways. That includes the muscles that support your back.
